Destination Guide York, England

York, England

Step back in time...

The picturesque medieval city of York was second only to London in importance up until the Industrial Revolution. The city, whose 13th century walls are one of the best surviving medieval fortifications in Europe, played a key role in English history. Its magnificent cathedral, medieval streets, grand houses and attractive riverside pubs make it an ideal spot for getting away from it all.

York’s cathedral, or York Minster, is the biggest medieval cathedral in Europe. Dating from 1220, this breathtaking structure features several architectural styles and a wealth of medieval stained glass. For an excellent view of the cathedral, walk along the city walls via steps at Bootham Bar. The fascinating York Castle Museum is well worth a visit. Featuring a collection of everyday objects from the past 400 years, it also has interesting displays of domestic interiors throughout the ages. Check out the National Railway Museum on Leeman Road - one of the biggest railway museums in the world. Travel back through time to the 1000 year old Viking City of York at the Jorvik Viking Centre. Recreated using archaeological evidence and displayed on the original site with sounds and smells of the Viking age, it’s a real step back in time! You’ll be thankful you don’t live in medieval times when you visit the dark torture chambers of the York Dungeon at 12 Clifford Street. Revive yourself with a cruise along the River Ouse or a walk in the Museum Gardens. York has a wide range of restaurants serving traditional English and international cuisine. Enjoy a pint in one of the many pubs, afternoon tea in elegant tearooms, a moonlit boat cruise or a play at York Theatre Royal. Let the magic of York weave its spell on you!
